Do you have trees and bushes adorning your beautiful property? Well, it might be good to have some greens around but it can also affect the foundation of your house. The damage often manifests in the form of concrete settling, which then results in worrisome cracks on your walls. Not only are these cracks unsightly, but they can also be dangerous.
The true culprit would be the roots of your trees and shrubs. Here are three ways it can affect your home’s foundation:
- The tree’s roots can grow up to three times its height, so it is not the best idea to plant them close to your home. If you have massive trees, the best thing to do is to plant them at least 10 feet away from your property, or else the roots will inevitably grow near or under your foundation.
- If it is drought season, the trees won’t get enough moisture. As a way for them to cope with the situation, their roots will burrow more deeply until they get close to another source of moisture. This can cause a change in precipitation under or around your home’s foundation and as a result, it will settle unevenly.
- When you decide to cut down the tree, the roots left behind will shrink in a matter of time. This will leave spaces and can make the soil too unstable to hold your foundation.
These things sound troublesome, right? But, don’t worry! An effective foundation repair can easily solve your problems. The solution will be dependent on what kind of problem those trees and shrubs have caused you. It can be concrete piling, installation of steel or helical piers, use of root barricades, or preventative landscaping. For this week’s featured project, we used our most popular PT2 system.
The Colony Homeowner Experiences Foundation Problems
We have already done work for this customer in the past on the other side of their house. But they called up again saying that they think that there was another problem happening along the front of their home!
They were starting to experience sheetrock cracks, doors sticking, brick or mortar cracks, and exterior trim separations. With these observations, we believe the main culprits are the large trees and bushes that were located very close to their home’s foundation at the front left side of the front yard. There was also soil erosion happening around the single-car garage at the front left corner of their house, which also played a role in the foundation damage.

For worrisome damages on your foundation, we like to use our most popular solution which is the PT2 system. This is rebar reinforced concrete piling, made of high-strength concrete and rebar to uphold the foundation of the structure. For this client, we installed eleven piers of that system.
We needed two concrete breakouts in the driveway so we could install our system properly. The client worried about it affecting the appearance of their beautiful home. But since we’ve done jobs like this many times before, we expertly patched it up so that it won’t be noticeable unless you inspect it closely.
Finishing the project took us two days. It might have taken three, but we put in some overtime during the night of the second day so that our client will not be burdened by another day.
Now, the homeowners can sleep peacefully knowing that the foundation of their house is already as good as new.
