Addressing Foundation Problems Caused by Trees in Richardson
For this featured project, we serviced one of our former clients in Richardson. Our team had previously installed our state-of-the-art piers around the perimeter of their home, but we were concerned about a large tree on their property. We suspected that it would reach further inside the house and start causing trouble. Well, we finally got the call.
After our initial inspection, our suspicions were confirmed. The tree’s roots had reached the middle of the house, affecting the moisture and causing the foundation to settle. Luckily, they had caught it in time before the problem had gotten much worse.
For this project, we decided on installing a root barrier instead of additional piers. This is placed between mature trees and concrete foundations to prevent the tree roots from sucking the moisture from the soil beneath the foundation.
Effective Root Barrier Installation
The first thing we did was to dig a 30-inch-deep trench between the tree and our client’s house. Digging the trench also required us to sever the roots that were going towards their home.
We tunneled under the sidewalk instead of cutting it out and repatching it, which would have looked worse.
After digging up the trench, we lined it with a 30-mil-thick HDPE material. This material is strong enough that it won’t allow new surface roots to penetrate under the house, while remaining flexible so it will hold up forever in the clay.
We then trenched it back in and completed the job in only 2 hours to complete with a full crew.
