Root Barriers: Environmentally-Friendly Protection for McKinney Home

Are you a fan of history and culture? Then you should check out the “I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story” Smithsonian Exhibit. It is exhibited completely for free at the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts from February 8, 2021 to April 23, 2021. You will learn about the complex stories of Asian and Pacific Americans and their ancestral roots, especially about the very first Asian immigrants and the role they played in significant moments of American History.

Speaking of roots, this week’s featured project talks about tree roots and how we helped a McKinney homeowner avoid disaster. Learn more about it by reading on!

Installing a Root Barrier to Prevent Foundation Problems in McKinney

A few months back, we had installed steel piers around a McKinney client’s garage because of their failing foundation. The pier installation had lifted and stabilized their home, but there was another cause for concern. There were two huge trees surrounding their garage—one was theirs, while the other was their neighbors. The sizes of the trees and their proximity to the house could create foundation issues later on.

The trees could not affect the steel piers, as they were safely pushed down to the restrictive layer of soil beneath the house. What could cause issues would be if the roots of the trees would reach past the area that the steel piers were supporting. If enough roots get under the house and remove moisture, there would be a loss in soil integrity that would lead to the foundation issues we mentioned earlier.

Their engineer recommended that they either remove the trees or install root barriers. Our client went with the root barrier, which would allow them to peacefully coexist with the trees without risking the stability of their home.

First, we planned and measured the areas where we would install the root barrier. We then dug a deep trench where the root barrier would be placed.

Lastly, we put the root barrier into the trench and replaced the dirt. This root barrier is made of flexible high quality material that is resistant to tears and punctures. It will prevent the roots from getting underneath the home.

All of this took one day.
