Trees are known to absorb moisture from the soil to sustain them. We have explained time and time again how this negatively affects soil integrity and causes movement, which is bad news for the foundation of our houses.
We have dealt with trees many times in our years of repairing foundation-related issues. Because of this experience, we were able to put together fast and effective solutions to help homeowners around the area. A great example would be the situation of a recent client that reached out to us this month.
Successfully Installing a Root Barrier in McKinney, Texas
This client gave us a call after he received word from a structural engineer who conducted a foundation inspection on his home. Based on the results of the inspection, his house was showing signs of possible foundation issues. Since it wasn’t bad enough to warrant remedial foundation work, the engineer suggested that a root barrier be installed preventively.
With this information at hand, we started on the project. First, our crew did the necessary pre-tests—it was lucky we did! If not for these tests, the client would have faced more issues along the road. A sprinkler head along with the newly installed drip line were not working properly. The homeowner managed to get in touch with the company responsible for the drip line installation to come fix it.
Next, we marked the ground to identify where utility lines for things like cable, electric, and gas were. We do this for every project as we do not want any collateral damage while we do our work.
After the necessary precautionary measures were done, we dug a 30-inch deep trench that cut the progress of any roots approaching the soil beneath the home’s foundation.
We then installed the root barrier, a 30 mil-thick HDPE black sheeting. The team then filled and compacted the trench back in with the dirt that was removed.
Using water and tamps, we made sure that the dirt was compacted back in and won’t settle later on.
With just half a day of installation, we were able to provide our client’s home with additional protection from tree roots, and also managed to spot issues like malfunctioning drip lines along the way. Nothing is more satisfying than going above and beyond to keep our clients happy!
