Worried Homeowner in Plano Turns to Us for Root Barrier Installation
A homeowner in Plano called us to inspect his home which had minor signs of foundation movement in the sheetrock, expansion joints, and trim work. He feared that it may lead to further damage.
Based on our initial inspection, there were no critical problems that needed remedial foundation repair at that time. However, we observed a couple of worrisome patterns that suggested a developing foundation problem. His property had three large trees that were affecting the structural integrity of the soil.
An average-sized tree can drink approximately 100 gallons of water a day. The more moisture that comes out of the clay supporting the house, the more that area will settle, causing the foundation to become unlevel.
After a thorough consultation with the homeowner, he opted for a root barrier installation between the trees and the house. The root barriers will essentially remove the surface roots from the trees that are getting too close to their home’s foundation. This was a more cost-friendly and less invasive repair that could address the current problem.
We installed 3 root barrier systems for the 3 trees that surrounded his house. In doing so, our team had to dig 30-inch deep trenches. The act of digging this trench severs the roots and causes the roots on the house side of the barrier to die. After this, we placed 30-mil thick, 30-inch deep HDPE sheeting materials to prevent new roots from passing through the barriers and extending towards the house.
