Sometimes, there are problem spots in our yard where water just won’t seem to drain and we have no idea why. These pools of water are unsightly, and the mud that comes from them can cause quite the mess. Plus, it could turn into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. And don’t forget how it can result in erosion and foundation damage if ignored long enough!
Water that pools after a rainstorm yet drains quickly enough shouldn’t be something to worry about. But if the pool of water stays there for a number of days, you might need to worry. A client in Allen, Texas was in a similar situation. Let’s see how we handled it!
Drainage Problems in Allen Home
Our team had recently worked on this Allen homeowner’s foundation. During the project, we had noticed how they were experiencing drainage issues on the right side of their home. We talked to him and he had mentioned that they were having different companies submit quotes for the repair. They didn’t know we also did drainage! Once they did, they decided to let us handle the job.
Upon further investigation, we found out that the area was much too flat. Because of that, the water could not drain quickly enough away from it. The homeowner had already tried to add gravel and pavers in the area, but that did not solve their problem. There was just too much water that the area couldn’t hold it all. Thus, it became very muddy and water would not grow around the fence.
Installing a French Drain
Our client had future plans for the area, so they didn’t want something that would be too visible and take away the visual appeal. We decided that the best solution for their drainage problem would be to install a French drain. The French drain would not be visible from the surface. Plus, the homeowner would have more freedom with the landscaping design since they wouldn’t need to deal with any clunky large catch basins.
To install the French drain, we dug an 18-inch deep trench. We then lined it with soil separator fabric which will eventually separate the dirt from the gravel to prevent any clogs from happening. After adding the fabric, we then added some gravel, a perforated pipe, and filled the rest of the trench with even more gravel. Next, our team encapsulated the trench with the rest of the fabric and covered it with dirt. The pipe used was smooth wall to to prevent clogging and collapsing. We also chose 4-inches pipes because they would be the most capable in handling high volumes of water even during the worst storm.
Water will be sucked into the vacant space between the gravel. This will then enter the perforated pipe through its holes. The water from the French drain we installed and the two existing gutter downspouts would then be directed to the front street. There, we had bore out a hole that would drain the water directly onto the street. Compared to pop up drains, this method is less likely to clog.
All in all, the entire project took only one day to complete.
