Multi-Pronged Approach to Dealing with Different Drainage Problems
There could be several culprits behind your yard’s inability to properly drain water. With no one-size-fits-all solution, our team makes sure to figure out the actual cause so we can come up with the best approach. This week’s featured project is the perfect example.
A homeowner in McKinney was having issues with three distinct areas in his backyard.
First, there was a low area with an old, small channel drain where the back porch met the pool decking concrete. Over time, this channel drain had clogged up and was no longer able to move the amount of water necessary to keep the area dry.
Second, the neighbor had installed a retaining wall to the side of the pool. Doing so had changed the way the water moved down the side of his house, keeping the area very saturated.
The last problem area was at the end of the channel drain, near a window and downspout. The downspout had very limited room, thus it would shoot water into the house by going through the window seals or through the brick line.
Once we were able to identify the issues and their causes, we strategized on how to improve the drainage in our client’s yard. There are many options available, and with our expertise and experience, we were able to come up with the perfect game plan.
Customized Drainage Solutions in McKinney, Texas
To address the muddy areas that held water, we installed large 12-inch NDS catch basin boxes that would function as small dry wells. These will collect the surface water and help pull in moisture from the clay as well. To get the best results, we dug a much larger hole than necessary. Then, we drilled holes into the sides of the catch basins and surrounded them with gravel. This process allows the box to suck in water not only from the top but the sides as well.
We then ripped out the old channel drain, replacing it with a NDS 4-inch Speed-D Channel Drain. This is much larger and could accommodate the water he was seeing in the area.
Our team then reworked the discharge line, which is the main pipe transporting water away from the house, for the downspout connection we mentioned earlier. We used a 4-inch solid smoothwall sewer and drain pipe. This can hold up over time much better compared to the common corrugated pipe. It can also move water much faster. With the changes we made, the water will now have a way to easily get into the discharge line we installed. The new pipe, which was bigger and sturdier, posed a bit of a challenge as it couldn’t squeeze in between the concrete and window sill. However, with the homeowner’s approval, we were able to cut a notch into the brick under the window that allowed the pipe to slide right in.
With everything we worked on, you would think the project would have taken several days. Because our hardworking team follows an efficient installation process, all of this took only one day to complete! And now that the drainage in our client’s yard is back on track, he no longer has to worry.
